Powering NOAA’s Data into the Future

by | Sep 25, 2025 | Global Civilian

Situation Context

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) oversees some of the world’s most vital environmental and climate data, supporting activities from hurricane prediction to fisheries management. However, with petabytes of data stored on outdated platforms, NOAA faced increasing challenges: slow data access, limited scalability, and obstacles to collaboration across its mission sectors. These issues threatened NOAA’s capacity to provide timely forecasts and insights to policymakers, researchers, and the public.

Our Approach

Global Alliant partnered with NOAA to speed up its digital transformation, focusing on cloud migration, modernization of high-volume data platforms, and agile program delivery. We worked closely with NOAA teams to identify legacy bottlenecks, design secure architectures, and migrate mission-critical workloads into scalable cloud environments. By implementing DevSecOps practices, we integrated automation for builds, testing, and deployments, enabling NOAA to release updates more quickly while maintaining a robust security posture.

We also implemented user-focused improvements. By simplifying dashboards and enhancing data pipelines, our work enabled scientists and analysts to access real-time observations more quickly. Our team trained NOAA staff on modern tools and techniques. It developed reusable frameworks that could be applied across various mission areas, ensuring this was not just a one-time upgrade but a foundation for ongoing innovation.

The Outcome

With Global Alliant’s support, NOAA significantly improved the speed, security, and accessibility of its environmental data systems. Cloud scalability enabled NOAA to manage rising data volumes from satellites, sensors, and field operations without issues. Automated DevSecOps pipelines cut delivery times from months to weeks, while dashboards and data integrations provided staff and stakeholders with faster, clearer insights.

Most importantly, these improvements enhanced NOAA’s ability to fulfill its mission: delivering timely, accurate forecasts and climate intelligence that protect lives, guide communities, and bolster America’s economy.
